The Isle of Sheppey and Whitstable are separated by the Swale, an estuary of the River Thames. The Swale is a very busy shipping lane, and the currents are strong. There are also sandbanks and mudflats that can be dangerous to swimmers. As such, it is not recommended to try to swim from the Isle of Sheppey to Whitstable.
A swimmer has completed the crossing however, setting off from The Leas in Minster on July 14, 2023.
