If my pool has too much alkalinity what should you do?

If your pool has too much alkalinity, there are a few things you can do to lower it.

1. Add hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid): Muriatic acid is a strong acid that can quickly lower the alkalinity of your pool water. However, it is important to use muriatic acid carefully, as it can also damage the pool surface and equipment if not used properly.

> - Always add muriatic acid slowly and carefully, following the directions on the product label.

> - Never mix muriatic acid with other chemicals, as this can create dangerous fumes.

> - Wear protective clothing and gloves when handling muriatic acid.

2. Use sodium bisulfate (dry acid): Sodium bisulfate is a dry acid that can also be used to lower the alkalinity of your pool water. Sodium bisulfate is less corrosive than muriatic acid, but it also works more slowly.

> - Add sodium bisulfate to the pool water according to the directions on the product label.

>- Brush the pool walls and bottom to help dissolve the sodium bisulfate.

>- Allow the pool water to circulate for at least 24 hours before testing the alkalinity again.

3. Use an alkalinity reducer: There are also several commercial alkalinity reducers available that can be used to lower the alkalinity of your pool water. These reducers are typically made from a combination of acids and other chemicals.

>- Follow the directions on the product label carefully when using an alkalinity reducer.

> -Some alkalinity reducers can also affect the pH of your pool water, so be sure to test the pH after adding an alkalinity reducer.

4. Partially drain and refill the pool: If the alkalinity of your pool water is extremely high, you may need to partially drain and refill the pool. This will dilute the alkaline water and lower the alkalinity level.

> - Drain only enough water to lower the alkalinity to the desired level.

>- Refill the pool with fresh water and test the alkalinity again to make sure it is at the correct level.

By following these steps, you can easily lower the alkalinity of your pool water and keep your pool water healthy and balanced.
