How do you chlorinate your pool with a sand filter?

Step 1: Backwash the filter.

This will remove any dirt or debris that has accumulated in the sand bed. To backwash the filter, turn the valve to the "Backwash" setting and run the pump for 2-3 minutes.

Step 2: Rinse the filter.

This will remove any remaining dirt or debris from the sand bed. To rinse the filter, turn the valve to the "Rinse" setting and run the pump for 1 minute.

Step 3: Verify the chlorine residual.

Chlorine residual is the measure of free chlorine present in pool water. The chlorine residual must be between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm) to ensure proper pool sanitation. To test the chlorine residual, use a pool test kit.

Step 4: Adjust pH.

pH must be adjusted between 7.4 and 7.6. To increase the pH, add sodium carbonate (soda ash). To decrease the pH, add muriatic acid.

Step 5: Add granular or tablet chlorine to the skimmer.

The amount of chlorine you add will depend on the size of your pool and the chlorine demand. Generally, you will need to add 2-3 ounces of granular chlorine or 1 tablet per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Place chlorine in the skimmer after the filter is fully rinsed and the system returns to filter mode.

Step 6: Run the pump for at least 8 hours per day.

This will ensure that the chlorine circulates throughout the pool and kills any bacteria.

Note: Shock the pool once per week to super chlorinate the pool and kill bacteria.
