How cold can the water be before you need a wet suit?

The water temperature at which you need a wetsuit depends on your personal comfort level and tolerance to cold. However, most people find that they need a wetsuit when the water temperature drops below 70°F (21°C). At this temperature, the body begins to lose heat faster than it can generate it, leading to hypothermia. A wetsuit helps to insulate the body and prevent heat loss, allowing you to stay in the water for longer periods of time.

Some factors that can affect your need for a wetsuit include:

- Your body fat percentage: People with a higher body fat percentage tend to be more buoyant and lose heat more slowly, so they may be able to tolerate colder water temperatures without a wetsuit.

- Your activity level: If you are swimming or surfing vigorously, you will generate more heat and may be able to tolerate colder water temperatures without a wetsuit.

- The air temperature: If the air temperature is cold, you will lose heat more quickly, so you may need a wetsuit even if the water temperature is relatively warm.

- Your personal preference: Some people simply don't like the feeling of being cold, so they may choose to wear a wetsuit even in warmer water temperatures.

If you are unsure whether or not you need a wetsuit, it is always best to err on the side of caution and wear one. You can always take it off if you get too warm, but you can't put it back on if you start to get too cold.
