Alpe Dhuez, An Island Under The Summer Sun

Alpe d'Huez became a top ski destination after the 1968 winter Olympics were held there. But it's in the '50s that it became famous as a cycling destination, when Fausro Coppi made an historic climb of the twisty road with an 8% gradient to win the Tour de France.

If you haven't been there yet during the warmer month, Alpe d'Huez is well worth discovering as a summer vacation destination. First and foremost, the panoramas are as beautiful in summer as in winter and short or medium length hikes will give you fantastic views of the Mont Blanc and the Mont Cervin. Besides hiking and cycling, many other options are available. Here are a few but, if your favorite activity is not listed here it certainly doesn't mean it is not offered, just ask!

Climbing

Alpe d'Huez features 150 climbing routes exposed west and southwest on the cliffs of Lac Besson, at an altitude of 2200 meters. These cliffs are ideal for beginning rock climbers as well as experts. The roc faces are from 30 meters to 120 meters high, the routes are of 1 to 4 lengths divided in 7 sections. Some inox installations increase security to an optimal level. If you prefer wall climbing, the Sport and Convention Centre of Alpe d'Huez has a climbing wall covering an area of 180 m, with 14 climbing routes to a maximum height of 12 meters.

Paragliding

To keep your feet off the ground, you can try paragliding. Two companies offer the activity, Alpe d'Huez Paragliding and cole du parapente franais. Both offer tandem flights in the morning, over the road climbed by the Tour de France, Bourg d'Oisans, or other locations. In the afternoon, more athletic flights are possible for more experienced flyers, thermaling flights for example.

Golf

The golf round, opened daily from 9am to 7pm, is perfect to be introduced to the sport or to improve one's game. The 9-holes compact golf is of a total length of 2,296 ft. All holes are par 3s and the course duration is of about 75 minutes. The practice range comprises 23 bays, including 8 covered. The complex also comprises a pro-shop, a training area with putting green, two bunkers and a rough. Equipment rental is possible and some activities, "Discovering golf" or "Family special" for example, are definitely worth signing up for.

Spa

To relax your muscles after a day full of outdoor activities, or simply to indulge yourself, you can visit the spa Alpe d'Huez. In details, the spa has three rooms for beauty care (facial, body care, hair removal, pedicure), a spa, a sauna, a hammam, and a great massage service. It is to be noted that the staff is qualified and attentive to all your needs. They also offer the latest technology in cellulite removal. While you are at it, you can stack up on natural beauty care and sun protection products.

Swimming pools

To go for a swim, and/or a bit of sunbathing, the outdoor swimming pool is open every day from 10.00am to 8.00 pm. If weather doesn't allow to swim outside, the indoor swimming pool is also open every day. Please note that bathing suits are obligatory in both swimming pools, and that swim shorts are not permitted. The rental of bathing suits is possible on location.

Summer Tobogganing

Summer tobogganing? No matter how weird is sounds, try it once and you will be back for sure! Alpe d'Huez offers two runs, one fast, one slower, running on the Butte de l'Eclose. The chairlift can even bring you up the hill from 10am to 6.45pm.

Last but not least, a special activity for every kid from 4 to 104 years old. By trying In'Vertigo, the fearless can walk on a tightrope hanging 8 meters above the ground at the Sport and Convention Centre. Parental supervision required for kids aged 4 to 6 years old.
