Who would have thought that from a side street in a typical market town in central England you would find one of the ski industry’s most respected independent travel companies?
Well, in the rural backwater of Market Harborough lies Snow Finders - a company that is to ski what Gordon Ramsey is to food. With ski holidays to Europe, North America, and South America they cover all aspects of ski and snowboard holidays and not just for the well heeled. But what place, you may ask, has an article on skiing in a mid summer magazine issue? Simple, you can ski somewhere in Europe on every single day of the year and the summer ski business is a growth area of the industry.
Just think, less gateway airports, leisurely train journeys through the most fantastic summer alpine scenery, beautiful cobbled-street traffic free resorts, fantastic queue less high altitude glacial skiing. Consider all this and you have just arrived at one of Europe’s most underrated yet spectacular ski resorts, Saas Fee in the Valais canton of Switzerland. Situated at 1850m with skiing available at over 3600m this truly is “the pearl of the alps” as the locals describe it.
For summer skiing read, “off-season skiing”. The lifts open from July 01st and continue right through to the winter period. This includes a bleary eyed first lift from the village at 7am in the morning, not for the faint hearted but it offers a long session of up to 9 hrs hours skiing! The ultra efficient lift system (well, it is Swiss run of course) can elevate you from the village to the top of the Allalin at 3500m in just 18 minutes. From here you can ski this open glacial area and even rub shoulders with famous international skiers who can be seen race training with their respective national teams. For borders and free-riders there are half pipes, quarter pipes, boarder/skier cross, kicker rails, fun and snow parks, etc.
The best skiing is done prior to around 2 /3 pm and for the energy packed you can choose activities from hiking, pony trekking, tennis, golf, football, volleyball, swimming, fishing, and the list goes on. If you have a less active persuasion there are also fantastic spa facilities at many of the hotels including saunas, salt grottos, steam rooms, beauty treatments, hay baths, and again the list goes on. Many of the hotels organise guided nature walks, wine tasting, visits to the resorts museums and a wealth of local historical knowledge.
For those seeking a luxury break then look no further than one of Snow Finders favourite Alpine hotels, the 5 star Ferienart Resort and Spa. For a more affordable 3 star with a twist then the funky hotel Dom would be just the ticket.
In essence, whatever your preference Saas Fee has something for everyone even if you just intend to escape the masses of the Med and sample it’s magnificent alpine charm.
For the best available deals call Snow Finders on tel: 01858 466888 or log on to www.snowfinders.com, they would be only glad to chat to you about Saas Fee and summer skiing options.
