Skiing accidents may happen even at the best resorts. If you have adequate knowledge about the types of accidents that may happen while skiing, then you can avoid the accidents. The common types of accidents are as follows:

Collision: This is one of the most common types of accident in skiing, where one skier collides with another skier and face head or facial injuries.

Ski lift: Sometimes accidents may happen due to poorly maintained ski lifts. However, ski lifts will be designed with highest safety measure only. But repetitive use by large number of skiers may damage the safety measures of the lift and may cause accidents. Ski lift accidents occur when the skier is loading or unloading. The ski lift operator will be held liable for the accident caused due to poor maintenance of lift.

Ski falls: Ski falls may occur due to improperly designed or maintained slope. The ski area operator should therefore take care of designing, maintaining and operating their slopes.

Ski instructor's negligence: Ski instructors should be careful in teaching both the people and ski school students. If he is negligent in providing safety instructions or falsely encouraging a student to do a blind jump, then there are chances of getting ski accidents. Ski instructor is also responsible to take care of the ski school students. He should not go for over challenging terrain. Such faults of ski instructor often lead to severe injuries to the students.

Skiing vehicles: Skiing vehicles are used through out the day in the ski area. The speed of the ski vehicle often causes accidents in skiing. It may cause severe injuries or even death. A collision in the ski area vehicle will also cause accidents.

Most of the ski accidents occur due to carelessness of the instructor or the skier only. Skiing will provide you lot of fun. However, it will turn to be dangerous if the skier has no experience and careless. The following tips will help you to avoid ski accidents.

  • Most of the skiers are likely to meet accidents in the evening when the sky becomes darker and when the skier becomes tired. The skier should therefore finish skiing before it gets dark and extremely cold.
  • Most of the head injuries happen in skiing since most of the skiers are not wearing head helmets.
  • You should avoid the people in front of you while skiing. Do not try to overtake them.
  • Use ski braces that will help you to avoid severe injuries when you fall.
  • Get clear knowledge of using ski lifts.
  • If there is any warning sign, be careful about it.
  • Skiers may face fractures in hand, collar bone and legs. In order to avoid fractures, skier should do physical exercises before 1 month of skiing, which will strengthen the muscles.
  • Selecting a correct run on skiing is important to avoid accidents. If you select a run that is too high to your level, then there are chances of accidents.
  • Though some situations like improper maintenance of equipments may call for ski accidents, most of the situations are under your control only. Be careful in following the safety instructions and enjoy skiing.
