First you need to think about renting your ski equipment rather than buying. After all, you are a beginner and you may not like it, and in this case you will save a lot of money by renting. You will need good quality skis, boots, goggles, knee patches, and clothing that will keep you warm but won't put too much weight on your skis. Honestly, you need to take someone with you who is more experienced like one of your trip buddies.

The clerks in the stores can be a lot of help as well. Tell them that you're a beginner but don't want to spend too much money and they should be able to help you get what you need.
