If you love to ski, British Columbia is the place for your next holiday. With several world class ski resorts and some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see, this is a top-notch vacation destination. Neighbors to the North of the United States, skiing in BC is the place to be. The ski season typically lasts anywhere from November until April, sometimes even slipping into May at the higher altitude resorts. BC has built much of its tourism economy on its ski resorts, and it shows in these wonderful resorts.
Located two hours north of Vancouver, Whistler Blackcomb is the cream of the crop. There are two gorgeous mountains and a town to boot. Stunning Whistler Village rests at the base of the ski hills. You will see million dollar homes; enjoy lots of shopping as well as the active nightlife in the restaurants and bars. You don't even have to be a skier or snowboarder to have a super time in Whistler Village. There is the best powder snow all year round, and there are runs to suit the novice to the most advanced.
There are over 200 runs within the 3,036 hectares of terrain. Even if you stay a week, you might not ski the same runs twice. You will spend less time in lift lines than usual and more time on the hills, as they have 33 lifts, many of which are high-speed. In order to enjoy the full experience, plan to spend a minimum of a few days at Whistler Blackcomb.
Big White is another fabulous BC ski resort. Located approximately one hour outside of Kelowna, this fabulous family ski resort also has its own village with many great restaurants and bars. There are many accommodation possibilities, with everything from value hotel rooms to entire chalets complete with a private hot tub for the entire family. The hill boasts 15 lifts and over 118 trails. There is plenty to do other than skiing and snowboarding. If you enjoy cross-country skiing there are numerous trails for your use. There is also a tubing area and an ice-skating pond. Big White also offers excellent night skiing, and there is a significant discount off of the regular daily price.
There are other great BC ski resorts for you to visit. Silver Star is in Vernon, Sun Peaks is in Kamloops, Apex is located in Penticton, and there are smaller hills within 20 minutes of Vancouver. If you're looking for steep hills with deep powder, then Fernie is the place for you. British Columbia is a perfect place to take your winter vacation. Often the resorts offer packages that combine with airlines, to give you a great deal. You can usually grab a shuttle at the major airports and be driven straight to your resort of choice.
