Question
dear ja-yu weng,
i've been wrestling for a couple years now, and i've been looking at the different styles of wrestling throughout the world lately. Specifically of interest to me was chinese wrestling. I wrestle freestyle and wanted to know if you knew anything that might be helpful to me from your style to mine.
--if you're unfamiliar with freestyle wrestling, hears a quick basic. the point is not so much to pin your opponent as to score 10 points. You get 2 points for causeing their back to expose past 90 degrees anyway. you get 5 points if you do a five point throw(heels go above the head while leaving the ground). You dont score points, usually.
so if there are any moves that you think might be helpfull to me, i would love to hear from you.
thank you,
jinn
Answer
Hello Jinn,
We have had many wrestlers train with us who have benefited from Shuai-chiao. The key difference is that Shuai-chiao does not depend on an uniform and the throws are more controlled. The best person who has great wrestling background as well as Shuai-chiao training is Matt Furey. You can go to his website at www.combatwrestling.com and check out what videos he offers in this area. You can also check out our website at shuai-chiao.org.
I myself wrestled and I can say there are great ways to take people directly to their back from a standing position. If you are located nearby a Shuai-chiao school you can give it a try.
Best of luck in your training,
Jan-yu Weng
