Training in West Virginia
Question
Hello,
I am 18 soon to be 19. I stand 5'11" and weigh about 250. I live in Fairmont, WV currently going to school. I'm very interested in wrestling. I've dabbled in martial arts for some time now. I'm very good at kicking boxing and russian sambo. I was never instructed in either of them for more than half a year tho. Most of what I know is self taught. I've wanted to be a wrestler for years but Idk if I'm exactly "qualified." Do you think I would be very "wrestler-like?" Idk how else to put that. Also, I've looked for days now and I can't seem to find a single wrestling training center or school near where I live. Can you find/suggest any schools/centers near me?
Answer
How are you doing Brent?
I did alittle research and found a website that has a wrestling school in West Virginia. Their website is http://mountaineerwrestling.com/ I don't know how far that might be away from you, but it's worth checking out. Also, check out www.myspace.com/deathmatch05. That is the myspace of Necro Butcher Dylan Summers. He still lives in West Virginia and may know of some wrestling schools. Tell him Mr. Mayhem sent you this way.
As far as if you would be "Wrestler Like" that's a very debatable topic. Wrestling is far more about how can entertain and who cannot. Playboy Buddy Rose was never at all well built and until he died was drawing crowds everywhere he went. What matters is charisma, ability to bump and protect your opponent, your ability to tell a story with your body, and your desire to always do your best. So far, the only thing I see that will hurt you is that you have martial arts training. From my experience, most people with martial arts training tend to have a tough time in wrestling. The bumps that wrestlers do is much different then the falls that martial artists take, people with martial arts have a really hard time not flinching when working on punches and kicks, and martial artists tend to hide their moves while in wrestling; everybody wants to see them.
I hope these answers help you out with your decision. I wish you the best of luck in whatever avenue you choose to take.
