Answer
How are you doing Nishant?

To answer your question, legitimate professional wrestling really ended 100% in 1948.  Legitimate professional wrestling started to fade away in the 1850s.  Legitimate wrestlers called Hookers, were a carnival act.  They would challenge fans to come and wrestle them and if they could win or not quit, they would win prizes.  The hookers began training people called Plants to sit in the crowd and the hookers would wrestle the plants.  That way the hookers could control if they were going to get hurt or not.

The plants began to branch out and train other plants and would run scripted professional wrestling matches because they could make more money.  As the number of plants begin to grow and the number of hookers diminished, wrestling began to swing to what it is today.  In 1948, several of the promoters that would run scripted wrestling shows got together and formed the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).  On that day, legitimate hooking events basically ceased to capture the crowds until the advent of MMA.

If you would like more infomation on this or any other history concerning professional wrestling, one good source is the book, "Sex, Lies, and Headlocks...the real story of Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation".  This book covers wrestling history from 1900 through the date of the book.

Hopefully this helps answer your questions.  Thanks for stopping by.
