Wrestling Managers
Question
Hi Dave. I've been kind of in and out of wrestling the past few years, but I noticed in one of your past answers that Genral Skandor Akbar passed away. Can you tell me when this happened, and what were the circumstances? Also, can you tell me what happened to the following managers and valets?
Lou Albano, Bobby Heenan, Fred Blassie, Jimmy Hart, Mr. Fuji, Gary Hart, Paul Jones, Missy Hyatt, Sunshine, Babydoll, Sunny, Sable, Jim Cornette, Paul E. Dangerously, JJ Dillion.
Thank you.
Sven
Answer
Hi Sven. Thanks for the question.
Skandor Akbar: died 8-19-2010 at the age of 75. Last I heard, no cause of death was given. He had given an interview few days before his death. Jim Ross commented that he saw Akbar at a reunion show not too long ago, and although Akbar was having a little trouble getting around, it didn't appear that he was having any major health issues. Akbar was still involved with wrestling in the years leading up to his death. He appeared at indy shows, and was a trainer at well.
Lou Albano: died 10-14-09 as a result of a heart attack at the age of 76. Albano retired from wrestling in the mid 90's. He did some acting, and wrote a book as well.
Bobby Heenan: he pretty much retired from wrestling after being released from WCW around 2000. He's made a few appearances here and there since then, and wrote a couple of books as well. He's had severe health issues, including beating throat cancer, but as a result of that, had to have his jaw reconfigured, and other parts of his face as well. If that wasn't bad enough, I heard he suffered injuries in a fall not too long ago.
Fred Blassie: died 6-2-2003 at the age of 85 from heart and kidney failure. He retired for the most part in the mid 80's, but made occasional appearances for WWE up until 3 weeks before his death.
Jimmy Hart: he is a close friend of Hulk Hogan, and last I heard is still employed by TNA, although he hasn't been seen on tv since the Nasty Boys were released. He's been busy with other projects outside of wrestling as well.
Mr. Fuji: he retired in the mid 90's, and was a trainer for several years after that. Other then his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, I haven't really heard much about him.
Gary Hart: died 3-16-08 at the age of 66 from a heart attack. Hart retired from wrestling in 1999. He promoted shows in the Texas area until his retirement. His book was released after his death.
Paul Jones: he retired in the early 90's. I haven't heard much about him at all, other then he owned an auto body shop in Charlotte.
Missy Hyatt: she still works on the indy scene, and is featured on her own adult website.
Sunshine: I haven't heard anything about her lately, only that she is married and living in Florida.
Babydoll: retired in the the late 80's, but started making appearances again in the mid 2000's, and still makes occasional appearances. She was working as a security guard.
Precious: retired in the late 80's or early 90'. She is married to Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin.
Sunny: she is still active on the indy scene.
Sable: she is retired and is married to former WWE Champion and current UFC Champion Brock Lesnar.
Jim Cornette: was with TNA for several years, and just recently signed with ROH.
J.J. Dillion: I haven't heard much about him lately, but he worked with WCW and WWE after his managing days were over.
Paul Heyman: he's not currently involved in wrestling, but there are rumors he will join TNA. He's currently the star of a high profile blog, The Heyman Hustle.
Thanks again for the question. Let me know if you have anyting else.
Have a great night!
Dave
