* I hope my hypothetical question captures your interest enough to answer. I am fascinated with the idea of the greats from the 50's 60's, 70's competing aginst the best pro wrestlers of today.
Answer
Well back in the day, or so to speak, wrestlers were not known to be choreographed. They all had to be great and never give that away. So the likes of Lou Thesz and Buddy Rogers had to be so good at what they did. Nowadays if you make a mistake, you don't get fired or even looked at wrong. It's just another day at the office.
Today wrestling programs are more about "entertainment", even if "wrestling matters".
I think the overall better wrestlers would be the 50s, 60s, and 70s wrestlers because they actually never really made mistakes and treated what they did as a sport and not an entertainment. Now it's the custom to entertain and things are more fake than ever. Sure most of the moves are still real, but many are done to not hurt the opponent while the older guys simply did it to spare.
Thesz for instance used real locks, and holds. He really applied them and really did them. The submissions though were not applied as hard.
I think if you matched him up with a guy like Kurt Angle, things could be great if both were going at it in their prime.
If you want to give me older guys and newer guys in matches and see who I feel could go over in them and why, that would work for me. But it's up to you.
Overall though, I think if the older guys went against the guys of today, things would be interesting and very entertaining. But the older guys in their prime would destroy the boys of today
