indy women wrestlers and earnings
Question
Thanks so much for answering. A female friend of mine has gone to various wrestling schools and has for eight years or so worked a variety of indy promotions around the country. She is respected by
her peers and works hard to put on a good show. She trains in the
gym two hours a day. At age 24 though she does not seem to earn enough to support herself even though she appears at 1-3 shows per
weekend. What might you expect the person I described to be earning. I realize that its only an estimate. Thanks again.
Answer
Well a person with 8 years of experience shouldn't be earning millions, but should be racking up a few grand a month minimum. It really depends on the area. Some areas you are in, there is no wrestling hotbed. Sure, wrestling fans are in every state across the US. There is no doubting that. But some states aren't as big on it. The southern states such as Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas all have great wrestling areas and Indy wrestling seems to thrive there. Of course, New York and Philly have a nice size fanbase that follows it. California as well.
But, if you're in places like New Jersey, Vermont, Maine, Wisconsin, Virginia, etc. They only follow WWE shows and they are majorly promoted. Even those shows sometimes don't sell out. So, issues abound. In those places, making 200 to 500 a weekend would be a nice payday.
Seeing as your friend is a woman, she is also put in a situation where she will make less. Women just don't make as much as men in this business. It's sad but true. I'm not saying that to be sexist or anything, it's just fact. Look at WWE, TNA, ROH, NJPW, CMLL, AAA, any promotion across the world. Now, will popular girls make good money? Sure! But, will they make as much if they are on the same level popularity wise as other Indy talents there too? No, in fact she'll make less than them.
She has to keep at it though, I mean the thing is, even 8 year veterans aren't going far sometimes. The best thing to do is go to a notable wrestling school where you can get proper training. And they can hook you up with top promotions in that and surrounding states.
