Penetration Step for Heavyweights
Question
Hi there! I'm 6'8", 270 pounds and am trying wrestling for the first time this year as (unfortunately) a senior in high school. It's a shame I didn't get involved earlier, because it all seems really enjoyable - more so than any other sport I've tried before.
Anyway, I wanted to know what alterations to the penetration step need to be made when shooting on the legs as a heavyweight. I don't want to go to the knee on my leading leg because I could easily get stuck under a heavy wrestler, but I also need adequate penetration so as to bypass the opponent's defenses and get firmly into his hips. Would you tell me how a heavyweight should perform his penetration step for maximum safe results? Thanks!

Chuck:
You sound like a smart athlete. That is key. And you are correct about heavyweights. It is a different game for big men than smaller athletes. The penetration step should still be worked on with alterations due to size. Don't drop to your knee BUT do change levels when you take your shot. Also, remember that the shot or attack has three components; the set up, the shot and the finish. You can help yourself by the way in which you set up your shot by creating pressure on your opponent's head, by pushing and pulling during the tie up and/or moving your opponent out of a solid stance and either getting him off guard or creating an opening for your shot.
YOu might want to look at some Greco Roman ties and setups.
An excellent product to help you is a new DVD series put out by USA Wrestling called Championship Access Greco Roman Wrestling.
you can see a demonstration of it by going to themat.com, clicking on All American Wrestling Supply and reviewing their video/books section.
