WALK-ON POSSIBILITIES
Question
Where to start? I'm 26 years old and about to get out of the Navy. I began wrestling when I was 7 years old and continued thru High School. I made it to state two years in Texas and then moved back to Ohio as a senior. I had a disappointing senior year and didn't qualify for state but I feel I could have placed if I hadn't choked. I wanted to try walking on at Kent state when I went to college after a year off but didn't take it seriously. At the time I went a little crazy, Kent was a huge party school. Sorry about all that I just wanted to give a little background. My question is would any Div 1 schools take me seriously as a walk on at 27 years young and what would I have to do to walk on. Or if their is open tournaments for people like me trying to prove themselves at a collegiate level. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated.
Answer
tough question. all my years in college, i've never been involved in the walk-on process. all the walk ons that i've known in one way or another made some kind of contact to the head or one of the coaches. letting them know their level of interest and dedication to whatever role that they could play for the team. you might want to give them the email address of your high school coach(s), they might want to talk to them to get an idea what kind of person you are in and out of the room. so i'd say, email the coach or coaches and let them know your level of interest. you might strike gold, they might have a hole somewhere that you could fit into. i hope this helps, good luck!
