Getting back into the swing
Question
Hey Anthony. I have been wrestling since kindgarten and I quit after 8th grade. I am now wanting to get back into the sport, for myjunior and senior years and I really need to lose weight. I was wondering which would be better for optimum weight loss and endurance: sprints everyday, long runs everyday, sprints and long runs everyother day, sprints and long runs every day in alternating weeks, etc. Which whould be the best?
Answer
Welcome back to the sport!
My suggestion is for you to join a sport, preferably track. Do the 800m event. That should mimic how you wrestle. Once you have joined that, you want to spend about 30 minutes to an hour AFTER track practice conditioning. The goal is to train when you don't feel like training, and getting your body used to it.
The training will last between 30mins-60mins, of a total of 400m of intense work. The workout is divided into a 200m dash, 100m run, and a 100m jog; which counts as one set. Usually the size of this 400m set (200m-100m-100m) is one lap around the track. You want to start out with 5 and work your way up to 10. Once you have reached 10 sets, you want to time yourself and try to beat your score.
Running / Sprints are hands down a daily thing (of course take the weekend off). As a wrestler you have to be used to this hard work. Work yourself into a good habit of doing these things. In the sport of track, find a girl to try to work with, whom you are interested in, who can work with you after practice. Usually you get the motivation to try and impress her, which causes you to work harder.
You cannot rely on yourself to dedicatedly train by yourself. You need peer support, you need a coach. By joining a sport you know that you would have a mandatory obligation to attend practice each and every single day. Even if you did rely on yourself and it will work for weeks and maybe months. The question is, how long can you keep up the hard work? I've seen many people train for weeks intensely right after wrestling season. During the summer, they just pig out and get tired and just wait until the next season.
How can I turn myself into a state champion?
