Transition from middle school to high school, and a weight question
Question
Is there a big difference between middle school and high school wrestling? I know some moves don't work as well, like the head and arm(headlock hip toss?), but what about the difference in strength/speed/skill? From the videos I see, it's like all high school wrestlers get a boost in muscle. Also, I turned 14 a month ago, 5'8/5'9, and I weigh 120. Should I lose weight to be in the 119 weight class or should I just gain some weight in fat/muscle? I also run a lot and do 80 push ups/sit ups a day with some other stuff if that helps any. So..I'll sum up the questions
How much harder is high school wrestling than middle school strength, speed, and skillwise?
Should I try to lose a pound and go down a weight class or stay in my current weight class? And will the increase in weight be any more difficult?
Answer
Well yea it is a lot harder in high school wrestling than middle school wrestling. Everything goes up, quality of moves, speed, strength, endurance. I believe the first time I went up from middle school to high school wrestling I almost puked in wrestling practice and I didn't do that at all in middle school. It's goes up to be like a military boot camp. So be ready
To be quite honnestly, I would just gain muscle weight. Tall guys don't do well in the light weight programs. Light weights are usually a lot smaller and your legs would present a great target. The middle weight class guys really use more power and don't use as much speed as the light guys do. If you ever saw a 103 weight class bout, and compared it to a 154 weight class, you'll see the difference. I personally think that height is a big disadvantage if you want to play the speed game. I would go with the power game and start working out. I hope that helps.
