I want to wrestle
Question
QUESTION: Hi. my name is aaron. i am 16 and weigh 60kg. i am 5 foot 8 in. i bench 185; clean 225, squat 320. i am quite strong for my size. stronger than anyone in my weight class at school atleast. i would like to wrestle this year for my school. first should i? second how can i learn basics. is there any good websites to teach me the bare essentials. i have friends who wrestle and i plan to spar with them throughout the summer but want to know a little more first. what excersizes should i do? what should i eat?
ANSWER: Strength is indeed a factor when it comes to wrestling but not quite the key to winning. Good news is that you will have an easier time wrestling guys who are weaker than you. But the reason why I really bag against strength wrestlers is that they become used to overpowering their opponent. When they wrestle someone as strong as them, or have equally as good of a skill; they get disappointed. Just keep this in mind with your strength advantage.
Flowrestling.org is the best website that has a lot of wrestling information (though mostly videos). It includes full matches, interviews, techniques and such. Other than that you will have to be a good wrestler yourself. Being book-smart about wrestling isn't really helpful though it doesn't hurt.
You are so lucky to have friends willing to wrestle with you for the summer. For 3 years in highschool I had no one to practice with but myself. But yeah watch the flowrestling.org website and you will find many drilling techniques that you can practice with your friends. Maybe add a little live wrestling here and there.
You should be able to run 5 miles in a breeze. Hopefully with at least a 7 minute mile pace. You should be able to do 75 pushups, 25 pullups. I use bodyweight as reference so that you are comparing yourself with other people in your weight.
Basically whatever makes you feel sluggy you shouldn't eat. Anything oily or too sweet stay away from.

QUESTION: first thank you for answering my questions you have been helpful. ill look on the site.
i know what you mean about strength. i wrestled my buddy whos gone state past two years. he killed me. even though im significantly stronger.
ok. are those excersizes what i should do every day? cause thats what i was asking?
Answer
Well every day should at least be a 2 mile run. Your goal is to make running like walking, something natural. Your "resting" pace should be faster than any other. You should lift weights at least 3 times a week. Thats pretty much it. If you want detailed workouts go to bodybuilding.com. Everyone has their own needs when it comes to weightlifting. There is no "standard" weightlifting procedure for everyone.
