Son Just starting
Question
I have a son who is 10 years old, and this is his 1st year. He is small, strong and quick. He is loving it. How can you tell if your child has potential? this is the 1st sport (we have done soccer, baseball) that I feel like he is excited about. Since the 1st practice, the coach has migrated to him and his partner. Does this mean anything? The coaches are great...but, the main coach has been paying alot of attention to him. I have absolutely no clue when it comes to wrestling, but I want him to learn a sport, and love it. Thoughts? What can I look for? (No, I'm not one of "those" parents)...:)
Answer
first of all, sorry for the delay. for a parent who is not familiar with the sport, of which i had two, its a guessing game. getting his hand raised and seeing the smile on his face when he talks about things, using terminology that you don't understand, is about all you have to go on.
competition is the best way to see if he has potential. he'll probably let you know himself by the way he talks about competition. if he consistently competes against the same kids it makes it easier. you'll be able to tell when he wrestles those same kids over and over. if he starts to catch up to them skill-wise, and starts to narrow the gap and even starts to beat them. then you'll know how much potential for growth there could be. but mostly if he's having fun while he's doing it. good luck!
