age for wrestling
Question
Coach:
What is the maximum age for wrestling? I am over 60, in good health, and always enjoyed wrestling. Am I too old for it?
Ric
Answer
Hey Ric,
Thank you for the question! I do not believe that you are too old, depending, of course, on the circumstances. I am 56 years old, and have been a 30+ year sparring coach to date, at the highschool and college level ( alma mater-Mount Union). Whereas, I spar daily , but I would never consider wrestling at an open tournament, primarily because the wrestlers coming through now are just bigger, faster, and stronger, along with some new techniques that will find you on your head at the end of one of them. My last official competition ('92)left me with a broken ankle from the finals. Needless to say, sparring with the kids in the practice room is done purely to show them what level of competition to expect from an All-American as a coach. But the blessing therein, shows the kids the level of dedication from me as a coach placed in their respective lives. I would say continue to pursue it as long as you are gaining the physical and spiritual rewards commensurate with your participation. I know that it will help you stay young and fit, mentally, as well as physically.
