Squealing
Question
I'm a rookie. My coaches always told me that if you squealed during a match your opponent would get points. I asked around my teammates and they all told me the same thing. I'm pretty sure they're pulling my leg, but I don't want to give them the satisfaction of knowing I'm looking it up, which is why I'm asking you. So, is it true?
Answer
Hey Rhue,
Thanks for the question. It turns out out that this is true. This particular set of scoring is called "cry-points". It happens when you are in a nearfall situation such as a tough, power-half. Since a referee is supposed to insure the safety of a wrestler, he or she is always poised to call a "potentially dangerous" situation. This is considered a verbal and mental tap-out and many will tease an opponent that squeals because it shows a "weakness" and some squeal to keep from getting pinned. The scoring is an additional point to whatever might have been earned as in a 3-point nearfall becomes a 4-point, or a two-point nearfall becomes a 3-point. It only occurs during a pinning situation and the pinning combination is stopped. The squealing wrestler will then remain in the bottom position and the match will resume. All in all, it is best to never squeal unless you are really being injured. The rule for a champion is to never show fear or pain during a match. Good luck in your pursuit of wrestling.
