Brute strength
Question
Hi Coach,
I am not a wrestler but i do live in an area where frequent brawls occur. I am 20 years old and have been strength training for 2 years. I am reasonably strong in main lifts like deadlift(140 kg) and overhead press(60 kg). But does this strength transfer over to wrestling and fights? Even my friends who don't go to gym are as strong as me in fights. Why doesn't gym strength transfer to real life? And what can i do to increase my brute strength overall? And my wrists are really weak and don't seem to get any stronger. Please advise me on this. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot
Answer
Hey Adithya,
Thanks for the question. The biggest thing you need to understand about strength training transferring in a scenario, such as a brawl, that this energy to be transferred must be done so with leverage. This is why boxers, wrestlers, MMA fighters, etc. have extensive sparring sessions - to determine angles from which they will be at the strongest point possible whenever delivering a technique. To develop overall brute strength with balance, practice this exercise: With an Olympic barbell - do what is called press squats - press the bar from behind the neck to an overhead position while squatting as low as possible, simultaneously. Attempt 4 sets of 25 repetitions. Augment this exercise with hanging from a pullup-bar - straight-arm - for a goal of two minutes, every other day. After a month of this add the hang time at night before bed, also. It will also take excellent nutrition to generate energy to do the workouts - check my site (http://opp.sunrider.com/healthessentials) for Sunrider products, and http://healthessentials.yourbodyiswater.org) for the best in hydration. Keep me posted on your progress. Best of luck to you!
