State Champion
Question
QUESTION: Coach,
I'm a sophomore in high school, I'm 5'6 and i wrestle at 145lbs. I use to wrestle one year in middle-school 3 years ago, but I've forgotten just about everything since then, so you can call this my first year wrestling. My dream is to become first in state by my senior year, and I'm willing to work hard to achieve it. Any advice you can give me?
ANSWER: Hey Anthony,
Thank you for the question. What you have aspirations for is within reach, provided you are prepared to do what will become an intense regimen. State champions are the best for many reasons, but perhaps, the biggest reason is that they have decided to always be one move ahead of their respective opponents, regardless of the categories where opponents match up (i.e. conditioning, nutrition, technique, wrestling gear, etc.)You will have to have every category covered and resolve yourself to be the first one to a workout, the one who has the most questions, and the last one to leave the room. Pick a style that you think fits you best, moves you like or have and advantage when you utilize them, then watch videos of technique on line because you can copy-cat what you watch from your chair over a period of consecutive days. Also prepare to find and utilize the best nutrition and hydration products available for superb conditioning. Check out my sites for information in these categories. (http://opp.sunrider.com/healthessentials) for Sunrider foods & (http://healthessentials.yourbodyiswater.org) for the best water in the world. Send me an outline of your detailed objectives and I will help you put a gameplan together. Keep me posted on your progress.

QUESTION: Thanks alot.
As for my how my objectives go:
10th grade(current):
Attend every practice.
Finish up season on JV.
Offseason:
Stay active.
Join another sport/Find wrestling club/???
Continue practicing wrestling with brother.
11th grade:
JV or Varsity Position
(Same plan as last year)
12th grade:
Varsity position
Practice, practice, practice.
Qualify for state.
Win 1st place @ state competition.
As of right now, I'm doing pretty bad with a record of 2-4, from two quad meets, but I feel that I'm getting better.
Also, I'd like to know your opinion on kneepads? I have a pair, but I notice not alot of people seem to wear them. Some of the best wrestlers i know, don't wear them. Do you think i should?
Finally, I've been having problems with the nutrition part of wrestling. I almost didn't make weight before both matches and I had run to lose the weight. Any tips, advice, or perhaps even a diet plan?
Answer
Hey Anthony,
Thanks for the follow-up I requested. Everything looks good. I would add under the 12th grade objectives - to win every tournament that you enter - this is to condition your mentality to expect to win, which will make you work accordingly. Remember, starting now, allow no one to outwork you. Be sure that you have your fundamentals in order. Be sure to wrestle year-round, perhaps cross-country in the fall. (post-season club is good)As for the knee-pads, I always wore them, period - the best kind are the compression-style, which normally fit a bit snugger, protecting the knee surface as well as supporting the knee joint. Use your feel-sense to know if you are being immobilized by them in any way.
As for your nutrition, I would order a box of Vita-Shakes from (http://opp.sunrider.com/healthessentials) and utilize them for pre-practice / pre-match meals. Vita-shakes provide the maximum potency for soy protein / carb ratios while staying under 120 calories per serving. Bottom line, weight control will not be an issue, and you will develop lean muscle mass, and have fuel in your tank to spare. I normally eat two Vita-Shakes for breakfast and will offset my normal sessions with additional servings when I feel a need for energy. As a routine, establish a mile-run at night a couple hours after eating your dinner, in order to make your body burn calories all night. You should be able to drift (lose) two pounds overnight with this method, without feeling like a starving refuge in the middle of the night because you are dehydrated. Don't forget to consult (bobbydouglas.com) for additional training aids during your downtime or study periods. Thanks for keeping me posted. Keep up the good work, and believe in yourself to overcome, at all costs.
