Which muscles - which stroke?
Question
Could you please tell me which swimming technique (stroke) suits best for certain large muscles of the body?
For example, if I want my pectoral muscles to larger up, do I rather use breaststroke or freestyle or butterfly?
I mean, if I swim a certain technique for an amount of time, what muscles should I expect to gain the most from that specific technique?
To sum up, I'm interested in these groups of muscles: abdominal, chest and upper arm.
Thank you very very much! And sorry for my English, if any mistakes made.
P.S. Do you possibly know any web page that might help me improve my butterfly technique?
Thanx a lot!!
Answer
Any stroke that you swim will greatly increase your muscle definition. For upper arms, the best would be freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. Butterfly is probably the stroke that creates the MOST muscle mass, but it is also the hardest stroke, so you will need to switch between butterfly, freestyle and backstroke.
For the chest, all of the strokes are recommended, but I would say that, depending on your technique, breastroke and butterfly are the best.
The abs are more difficult. Swimming is not particularly good for abdominal toning, and you will therefore need to do other forms of exercise. I suggest crunches, pike ups on an exercise ball, and roll ups from a high bar.
Here is a website for butterfly technique, which I simply accessed by going to google and typing in the phrase "swimming butterfly technique":
