teaching a 5 year old how to dive head first in a swim race
Question
My 5 1/2 year old is on the swim team and has to g about 3 seconds faster to be the best swimmer in her age group. She dives in sort of flt, but her feet hit first, really putting on the brakes. Are there any step by step speed diving tips on how to get her to dive in head first?
Answer
Steve--
If you can get into a deeper pool you can start off the side. Have her kneel down on one knee with the other foot on the edge of the pool, arms over her head ready to dive, then have her lean forward and push off the deck with the one leg, keeping her head down and arms up. This is the best place to start with a young child and it teaches them to push with their legs.
The reason young kids land feet first is that they don't extend their legs entirely when they jump and then pick up their head, which cause the feet to drop to the water first.
Watch her head and make sure she pushes entirely with her legs, when she leaves the deck/starting block her toes should be pointed while in the air. Good luck
Let me know how it goes,
