I think Im one of the 3% who cant float...

Question
George,

I just read your response to a previous inquiry.  I'm a 6'4" 225 lb. male with large legs (from sprinting) and little body fat, and I can't float even in the dead man's position.
I'm trying to learn to swim, but my lack of floatation is a serious problem, since I start sinking the moment I stop moving through the water quickly; I can't rest for even a moment.  Any advice?  Thanks.

Answer
Eric--
Welcome to the 3% club, as a competitor, I had a body fat percentage of around 6-8% which made it very difficult to float(the only time I floated was with a lungful of air and my cheeks puffed out, my lower body sank like stone).  The best suggestion I can give you is to rely on side stroke or elementary backstroke to get your rest.  These two strokes are recommended by the Red Cross for boaters who are stranded far from shore and need a rest while trying to swim in.
Ask your instructor to help you with these.
Hope this helps,
George
