Diving instruction
Question
Hi George, my 10 year old daughter has just joined a swim team and all the other kids know how to dive, she does not. What training tools, books, articles or suggestions do you have to help show her the basics.
Thanks
Answer
Fern--I don't know of any books or videos that can help you but here are some techniques that you can use to teach her.
If you can get into a deeper pool you can start off the side. Have her kneel down on one knee with the other foot on the edge of the pool, arms over her head ready to dive, then have her lean forward and push off the deck with the one leg, keeping her head down and arms up. This is the best place to start with a young child and it teaches them to push with their legs.
The reason young kids land feet first is that they don't extend their legs entirely when they jump and then pick up their head, which cause the feet to drop to the water first.
Watch her head and make sure she pushes entirely with her legs, when she leaves the deck/starting block her toes should be pointed while in the air. Good luck
Let me know how it goes,
George
