What will help me shave time off of my butterfly
Question
Hi, I am a senior at Richwoods High School in Peoria, IL. For the past year or so, I have been wavering around the 1 minute mark in my 100yd butterfly. It seems stamina is my biggest issue as I will take it out in a 27/low 28 and bring it back in a 33/34. I really am striving to get under the 1 minute mark and, if possible, finish the season around a 55 second mark. I have always thought that my technique was ok, but it could use a few tweaks. Now, I'm thinking that there is more I can pay attention to in terms of technique. I was just wondering if you knew of anything that I could most likely work on, besides swimming lots and lots of butterfly, that would help me shave these last few seconds off of my time and help me achieve my goal.

That first time under 1:00 is a challenge, but once you get there another drop is usually quick to follow. The first suggestion I can give you is one of the easiest to fix. Really concentrate on starts, turns and streamlines. Try to judge your turns so you hit the wall in a position that you can flow through the turn and not hit it short(which will stop your momentum). Your first 2 or 3 strokes off of the start and each turn should be the strongest of the lap. Don't breath for at least the first stroke off the turns as that slows you down too much also. Then try to breath every other stroke as much as possible.
You really want to keep your strokes as smooth and easy for the first 50 as possible, but you still want to be out under 27. The third lap should be a build up to a full sprint for the final 25. Finishing in 33 or 34 is too slow, work on getting that last 50 to 30+ or 31. If you do broken 100's of your stroke, try to negative split them so you get used to really pushing that 2nd 50.
I hope this helps, if you need anything else let me know.
Good Luck,
George
