teaching a 19-month old to swim
Question
My wife and I enrolled my 19-month old in swim lessons, and the teacher immediately did two things that freaked him out: pulled him away from his mom on lesson 1 to use him as an example, and dunked him on the 2nd lesson, both of which terrified him (she took him out early of the 2nd lesson because he would not calm down).
I am willing to teach him myself, as he is very comfortable in a pool with me. He's not afraid to jump into the water if I catch him, and will swim around all day if I'm holding him. I'm an expert swimmer and have been in pools since I was a 6-month old, but I'm not sure how to begin or what lessons to teach. Any advice on how to go about it?
Answer
I would use your digression when starting to teach a 19 month old (I know my 9 month old loves water but HATES COLD WATER!) but my 3 yr old swims under water and has been comfortable in it since day 1. At any rate did you get a chance to tell the instructor that you weren't happy. I would talk to the pool director and get your money back and maybe try a new instructor. This was a mommy (parents) and baby class right?
I'm sorry that all of you had such a horrible experience. Let me know if I can help in any way.
