swimming butterfly
Question
Hi.
I am on my high school's varsity swim team(they don't have a freshman or JV team). I am a freshman, and before the high school team i have been swimming competitavely for about 3 years or so, and over the past year or so, my butterfly has been getting very good. No one else on the recreation team that i was swimming on can beat me at it, and even on the varsity team, almost no one can beat me. Sorry if I sound like I am bragging. I swam a 50 yard butterfly a few weeks ago on the recreation team for an inter-sqaud meet, and i did a 29.79. I really haven't swam the 100 yard butterfly, which i have to swim in high school. But I want to be able to swim the 100 Butterfly in under 1 minute by the end of the season.
what dryland exercises that dont require an a gym could i do to make the muscles that use when i swim butterfly stronger so that i can swim it faster?
And also, could you tell me where the muscles are, because i dont know the specific names for many muscles? I only know that deltoids are my back muscles(i think), biceps/triceps are my arm muscles, and that is just about it.
oh yeah, i usually wear a swim trunk in stead of a jammer or speedo, but i boorwed someone's jammer when i got the 29.79, and i am waiting for my own jammer to come in the mail. I dont know if that is important though.
Thanks, and sorry about this being so long, I just like to make sure that you have all of the details that i think are important.
Answer
Bryan--
Let's start with the muscles in your upper body. The biceps(front)/triceps(back)of your arms, triceps are a little more important. Deltoids are the muscles on top of your shoulders. Latissimus Dorsi are your back muscles that lay from about mid-shoulder blade, out to your sides and down to your lower back. They are the ones you see below and behind your armpits. Trapezius, which is the back of your neck to about the middle of your back. This muscle lies under your Lats. In your forearms are a group of muscles(I can't recall them at the moment), that are also important. Your Pectoralis major and minor, which are your chest muscles, as well as your abdominals(all of them) are the important muscles in front.
As for exercises, push ups, situps, tricep extensions(use a chair) and pullups(with your hands wide and narrow)are probably the best dryland you can do without a gym or weight room to workout in.
Don't overtrain your butterfly as it can cause shoulder injury. You can train with freestyle and one arm butterfly drills and still be successful, just work hard at whatever your doing.
Good Luck.
