Is it too late to start competive swimming at the age of 15?
Question
I have taken swimmig lessons at the YMCA before and passed the final level master swimmer. I have swam before how ever never competively. Is it too late to join a competive swim now? However I am not the most fit 14 year old out there but at the same time I'm not really out of shape, should I get fit before joining or should I join and then get fit along through their training?
Answer
Hello Jacob,
No definitely not. It definitely is NOT too late to join competitive swimming right now. It may sound cliche but "it is never too late" does hold true in this case. A lot of swimmers start at high school anyways and you will always improve as long as you try. You should definitely get fit along through the swim training just so you can get your muscles used to swimming in the water. Doing some dry land (light, weight training) will also help you during your competitive swim training. Just attend all the workouts and try your best and you are bound to see major improvements in your swimming abilities.
