1. Locate the pool drain. The main pool drain is typically located at the deepest point of the pool, usually near the pool filter system.
2. Remove the pool drain plug. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the screws holding the drain plug in place. Be careful not to drop the screws into the pool.
3. Clean the drain. Use a wire brush to clean the drain opening and remove any debris or dirt that may have accumulated.
4. Apply adhesive primer. Apply adhesive primer to the inside of the drain opening and the outside of the PVC adapter. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Screw the female adapter into the drain opening. Hand-tighten the female adapter until it is snug. Then, use a wrench to tighten the adapter an additional 1/4 turn.
6. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the PVC adapter. Wrap the Teflon tape around the threads of the PVC adapter in a clockwise direction. This will help to create a watertight seal.
7. Screw the PVC adapter into the female adapter. Hand-tighten the PVC adapter until it is snug. Then, use a wrench to tighten the adapter an additional 1/4 turn.
8. Attach the PVC coupling to the PVC adapter. Apply adhesive primer to the inside of the PVC coupling and the outside of the PVC adapter. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then, hand-tighten the coupling until it is snug. Use a wrench to tighten the coupling an additional 1/4 turn.
9. Attach the union to the PVC coupling. Apply adhesive primer to the inside of the union and the outside of the PVC coupling. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then, hand-tighten the union until it is snug. Use a wrench to tighten the union an additional 1/4 turn.
10. Reinstall the pool drain plug. Screw the pool drain plug back into the drain opening. Be careful not to overtighten the screws.
11. Test the drain. Turn on the pool pump and check for leaks around the drain. If there are any leaks, tighten the union or the PVC coupling until the leak stops.
