Springboard and Platform diving
Question
My son was in the elite team at Western Australian Institute of Sport, and is now competing at Age Nationals where he received two golds and one silver medal on 1m, 3m and 5 and 7 Platform. We are travelling to California to visit friends in July and he would love to participate in a training session while visiting. We are staying near Anaheim and would appreciate it if you could advise us where to, or who to, talk to to make arrangements and see if it could be possible for him to train with fellow Americans his age. He is 14 years old. Thank you,
Answer
Hi Leigh-Ann,
You happen to being going to a part of the States that is known for great diving pools, teams and coaches. Here is where are suggest you take your son and these are the closest pools to Anaheim:
The Mission Viejo Nadadores Team: They have a great outdoor pool with four springboards, all platform heights along with dry land equipment. This is where our most famous diver, Greg Louganis, trained during his 1980's Olympic career. It is also the site of many of our national championships.Located in Mission Viejo.
Crown Valley Divers: Very close to the above pool. Outdoor pool with four springboards but only a 5 meter platform.Located in Laguna Nigel.
McCormick Divers - Indoor pool with four springboards and all platform heights. Right on the water in Long Beach.
Pacific Diving Academy: Indoor pool with four springboards but no platforms. They have the best indoor dry land training room anywhere in Southern California at their gymnastic center.Located in Cerritos.
You can find contact info on these programs by going to www.usadiving.org. Click on Clubs and then Find A Club. Enter California and a list of teams will come up. Look for the ones I have suggested. There are more where you are going, these are just the closest ones. I am sure he will be welcomed by one of them.
Have a fun trip and make sure you go to Disneyland!!
