Video software
Question
I was at a diving club that had a camera shooting live images from the tower and springboards with a 1.5 minute delay on the mac notebook screen so divers could complete their dives and walk over to the monitor without having to rewind and playback. I have been trying to find this software for my Mac for a month with no luck. Any suggestions?
Answer
Hi Bill -
I am not aware of any computer software program for a Mac or a PC but I can tell you how diving coach arrange for their divers to immediately watch the dive they just practiced. The most common method is purchasing a TIVO unit and programming it so that it records every 45 seconds to 1.5 minutes and hook ir up to a TV and use a simple camera focused on the board or platform they are using.
The hard part is figuring out how to program the TIVO. When a coach calls the TIVO help line they offer no advice as they are in the business of selling subscriptions.
I know of one coach in the Seattle area who devised his own set up for less than $100. He went on Craigslist and E-Bay and obtained an inexpensive TV, a DVD recorder and a basic security camera. He bought a recordable DVD and set up the recorder to record every minute. Works just great for him.
I am sure that the club team you observed used a TIVO, DVR or a DVD recorder and figured out a way to hook it up to a Mac. I have not seen a Mac used to display the dive because of the danger of it getting wet. I have only seen TV's used, especially ones that can be used outdoors and have a weather/water proof quality.
I would go back to this team to see how they did it. If you can't go back to this club, go to www.usadiving.org, click on Clubs and then Find A Club. Enter your state and a list of teams will come up. You are bound to find a team that can help you with this set up.
Also go to www.diving.about.com. This site I am sure will have info on how coaches use this great method of divers being able to instantly see the dive they just performed.
Hope all this helps.
