* Fiberglass cloth or mat (minimum weight of 170z)
* Fiberglass resin
* Hardener
* Paint roller and tray
* Masking tape
* Sandpaper
* Safety glasses
* Gloves
* A respirator
* A brush
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Area
- First, remove any loose debris from the surface of the diving board. This includes dirt, algae, and any other foreign objects. Sand the area around and underneath the crack with 80-grit sandpaper.
Step 2: Apply Masking Tape
- Use the masking tape to create a border around the cracked area, and then extend it about 6 inches beyond the crack on all sides. This will help to protect the surrounding area from the resin and hardener.
Step 3: Mix the Resin and Hardener
- In a well-ventilated area, mix the fiberglass resin and hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure to mix thoroughly and wear protective gloves, glasses, and a respirator when working with these chemicals.
Step 4: Apply the Resin to the Crack
- Use a paint roller or brush to apply the fiberglass resin to the cracked surface and along the edges. Make sure to press the resin into the crack with the brush to ensure it is completely filled. Work quickly as fiberglass resin can harden fast.
Step 5: Apply the Fiberglass Cloth or Mat
- Cut a piece of fiberglass cloth or mat that is large enough to cover the entire cracked area and extend beyond the masking tape by about 1 inch. Press the fiberglass material into the resin making sure to smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles.
Step 6: Apply a Second Coat of Resin
- Allow the first coat of resin and cloth to harden according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then, apply a second coat of fiberglass resin over the fiberglass material, being sure to cover all areas completely.
Step 7: Let the Fiberglass Patch Cure
- Allow the fiberglass patch to cure completely, which may take up to 24 hours. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the specific curing time.
Step 8: Sand and Paint the Area
- Once the area is completely cured, use 80-grit sandpaper to sand down any rough edges or bumps in the fiberglass patch. This will help to smooth out the surface and make it easier to paint.
- Finally, paint the repaired area with a pool-safe paint that is specifically designed for use on fiberglass. This will help to protect the patch from the elements and extend its life.
