diving instruction
Question
My son and I live in Newport News, VA. He loves being in the water, but is not interested in competitive swimming. When he is at lessons he is always looking at the diving boards. He has asked me about taking diving lessons. Are there any places near Newport News that offer that kind of instruction?

In looking at the area you live, the closest city I could find with a program is in Virginia Beach. There is a team that offers lessons to beginners called K2 Diving. I do not know which pool they use. I found their info by going to this website:
www.divemeets.com. Click on 'Teams' and a huge list will come up. Scroll down under AAU Teams until you get to teams in VA. Look to the left for the team name and click on it. The contact info will appear. Call coach Keith to set up a day and time to watch a practice session so your son gets an idea of what to expect. You should also keep scrolling down this list and find other programs under VA that belong to other organizations, high schools and colleges.
You can also try www.usadiving.org. Click on 'Join USA Diving' and then click on 'Find a Club'. Enter VA and a list of teams will come up. There are programs in Richmond which I know is rather far away but you could call them and ask if they know of programs closer to you.
There is also a website, www.swimmersguide.com, that lists pools all over the US. On the home page, enter USA, then the state and then the city or county. A list will come up telling you whether or not there is a diving program at the pool.
Finally, ask the pool manager at your facility why there is no diving program there. They may say they cannot find anyone to teach lessons. If that is the case, you could try contacting USA Diving or www.aaudiving.org and ask if there is anyone interested in starting a program at your pool.
Hope all this helps. Good luck. I am sure you find something, you may just have to drive to find a program.
