Is it too late for me to have a career in diving?
Question
Hi Tom,
My name is Adrian, I'm from Australia. I am 18 and i really want to begin diving and have a successful career. I have done gymnastics for 7 years and i have done diving previously in years 2007 and 2008, I am now doing dancing (as both my diving and gymnastics opportunities have stopped due to access). So i have some experience and am quite comfortable being in the air and performing rotations etc. Back when i was diving i competed at various state competitions, and with gymnastics too. I am moving to Sydney next year, and i have looked up some Diving academy's there. So is it too late to have a career do you think?
Thanks for all your help,
Adrian

It is not too late by my standards but you have to find out from the diving academy's you mention. They may think you are too old to start a diving career. The reason is that by the time you are ready to compete, you will be in the division we call here in the states
'Senior' diving. This is for athletes 19 and older. You will no longer be able to compete in FINA Group A #divers age 16-18#. Senior diving is the most difficult level and divers only perform the most difficult somersaulting and twisting dives. No 'voluntary' or 'compulsory' dives at this level like you did when you were younger.
I would not wait any longer to start diving but you should contact these teams soon to see if they accept new divers your age.
Good luck with your pursuit of diving.
