Walking plan after surgery
Question
Hello! Two years ago I had a spinal fusion in my lower back. Since then I have gradually recovered. My only problem is if I try to get back to an aerobic type of schecule, I get really sore. I like to exercise everyday. Am I pushing myself? shoul I wait until there is entirely no pain and begin very slowly? I am a 53 year old female. Thank you.
Answer
This sounds like a medical issue, which I am not qualified to advise you on. What has your doctor said about it? Assuming your doctor gave you the go-ahead, I can make a couple of observations.
You did not mention what kind of aerobic schedule, but if running hurts, maybe walking will not. If impact-type exercise of any kind makes you sore, perhaps you could try swimming or cycling as an alternative.
I also assume you mean your back is sore. If it is other muscle soreness, you could be trying to do too much, too soon. Beginning very slowly is always a good idea after a long layoff from exercise.
