Footstraps again Im afraid
Question
QUESTION: Hi Windlover, just put the footstraps on the board this evening and so a couple of questions have arisen with that matter:
I read in the manual that the straps should be set so that they allow no more than the mid foot to go through, the picture showed that only a about 2 inches of the big toe poked through: so i have the straps in, and one of them seems about right to me, its nice and loose so i can slide my foot in to the "correct" position easily enough, but the others require me to really force my foot in in order to reach that "correct" position. Which of these is better?
I presume the former, so the foot can go in and out quicker if needs be...
Also, because here in Ireland I need booties, in order to reach the afformentioned "loose fitting" i really have to extend the straps beyond what seems to be normal as the the pairs of holes in the soft material which sits on the board are not long enough to match up with the "main" holes when extended, sorry if this is unclear, but I assume thats no big deal? - to have the "main" holes in contact with the board, bypassing the ones in the soft material?
And finally, while practicing moving into the straps like you said, I see that it will indeed by quite a balancing act, do you have an opinion on whether I should go for the one rear strap in the middle or the two - I have only seen the one in the middle set up on quite small wave and freestyle boards. So yeah, just any general tips on that stuff especially the strap tightness would be appreciated and sorry about the length and all the questions, thank you very much as always
ANSWER: Hey Aaron,
No problem answering your questions. Better to ask and get some knowledge than stay quiet and uninformed.
Your straps should be adjustable. Very few straps are fixed size and only adjustable via holes in the straps. Inspect the straps and look for some velcro. Just start peeling velcro back. You should get to a base layer inside the strap. It may be just nylon webbing with velcro or maybe thin plastic with velcro. In either case, this where you adjust the size to custom fit your foot. Just realize that you should make minor adjustments until you have it fairly close. If you move one end of the strap say 1/4 inch (or say 5mm) you are actually moving it double that amount. As for adjusting them for use with booties, put the booties on and make the adjustments. I always wear some type of bootie just to protect my feet from cold and rocks. The best way to adjust them would be to get everything wet. I know that might not be an option at this time of year but everything gets just a bit looser when its wet. If that is not an option right now, adjust them dry and then make minor changes the next time you are out sailing.
As for the rear strap, I would suggest using both. That type of board works a bit better with your back foot just a touch off center. It also gives you a little better foot position for speed.
Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover

QUESTION: Thank you, and roughly how tight should they be?
Answer
Hey Aaron,
Your toes should stick out about 2-3". The strap should be against but not over your instep. If the strap is too far up on your foot then there is a possibility that your foot would not come out properly and could possibly cause injury in the event of a fall.
Hope this helps.
