what board to buy?
Question
I am a seasoned windsurfer with almost 20 years in the sport. I have sailed a BIC Electric Rock (265cm and 102L) for the past 15-16 years as my primary board. I mainly use it with 5.0 and 6.0 and a few times on a recently purchased 7.0. I also have a used Mistral Ecstacy (?) that is about 84L and is 254cm (I think). I sail so infrequently these days due to work/family that the E Rock is mostly what I use when I do get the chance. The Electric Rock has developed a very soft spot on the port side under the back right foot (too much jumping!). I think it might even have a little water inside now as well. Therefore, it might be time to retire the E Rock and get a replacement. What is a good short board for 5.0 to 7.0 sails that can be used for free riding, small waves, bump and jump, moderate planning conditions. I am 5'10" and about 137lb (I am pretty good at working a board on to a plane in marginal conditions...maybe my body size helps). Besides jumping when the conditions are right, I land just about all my traditional jibes. Waterstarting is also no problem. I will let the Ecstacy be my high wind bunp board (4.0 to 5.0).
Answer
Hey Jack,
Great to hear that someone else is still enjoying older gear. My favorite board is a '91 Mistral Screamer and still gets used more than any of my 6 boards. Not much you can do about those soft spots without adding weight to your board. I agree it is about time to retire the E Rock.
As for a new/newer board, it sounds like you would be looking for a freeride board. They have taken the place of b & j boards. Early to plane, fairly fast, easy to ride, good jumpers, and a wide range of sails. They tend to be a bit wider now but shorter too with the same volume.
There are so many to choose from now and all are getting decent reviews. As for quality, the competition is so great that pretty much everyone is making high quality boards. Main thing to look for is what will fit your style and conditions.
Check out www.windsurfingmag.com and click on equipment for reviews on 2006-2008 boards. If you are looking to save some $'s, check out iwindsurf.com classifieds, ebay, craigslist and local swap meets for used gear. There is usually plenty of decent gear to be had for a good price. Also, check out the 'links' section for retailers. You can probably find some good deals on closeout items if you are wanting a new board. Best of luck with your shopping. I'm sure you will find something to suit your needs.
Hope this helps.
