Great to get your feedback on a board
Question
Hello Windlover,
I presently own a Fanatic Bee 164 L Board. I have been sailing it off of the tip of Cape Cod for about 5 years now. I recently bought a 6.8 Gastra Swift Sail which i am happy with. I am looking however to move to a smaller board that will go faster and handle better on windy days (20+ knots). Another windsurf buddy of mine thinks I should go down to a 105/110 L board. I am 6ft 4 in and weigh just over 235 lbs. I am in good shape but not sure i so sure a smaller board at that volume would be enough to properly support me. Particularly when I waterstart. What are your thoughts of a bigger board such as a 133 L Mistral Explosion? A shop on the Cape has a 2007 model at a reduced price. Thoughts? Other recommendations?
Answer
Hey Paul,
If you are proficient at waterstarting, you could sail a 105/110L board but, at your size, you probably would need a solid 25kts+ to really get it going. If those days are rare and 20+ happens more often, then I would think that the 133L Explosion would work well for you. The great thing about the Explosion is it's early planing ability and it handles chop very well. It can also hold a fairly wide range of sails so it could become an often used board for you.
The main thing for you to determine what size you want to go down to is the average number of days for light winds, medium winds, and high winds. If you get more light to medium, and you want to get maximum sailing days in, choose a board that will keep you on the water the most. If the Explosion fits into your needs, go for the deal. If there is a chance to test ride a similar board, do that too to help you decide if it will work for you. Just remember that a newer wide shape is going to ride a bit differently than the old Bee. Best of luck with your shopping.
Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
