Replacement mast base
Question
I "inherited" a 1980s Shark by Wayler windsurfer that is in better than average shape. I am an total novice. However, after doing some research I'm sure I'm missing the mast base or foot and no Wayler parts are to be found on the web. The board has two holes about seven inches apart and an elastic cord with a clip in the center that extends up from the board. The mast is two pieces of 2" diameter fiberglass pipe and hollow at the big end. Can I use a replacement base or is the board toast?
Answer
Hey Peter,
About the only place you will find old Wayler parts is ebay or Craigslist. With the type of mast base you need (it is a Wayler exclusive part), it will be difficult to find a replacement mast base. If you are unable to find a replacement base, you might consider trying to make the part that goes into the board out of a hardwood like teak or mahogony and attaching a modern universal joint and mast base to the wood part. The part probably had two flat sides and went in one way and then twisted 90 degrees to lock it into place. The second hole had a smaller plug with a cord attached to the base plug and kept the base plug from twisting out.
Hope this helps.
