recommended board for windsurfing

Question
QUESTION: I windsurfed quite a bit... in the summer of 1984 (original Windsurfer board). Its 26 years later and I'd like to get back into it. Can you recommend a board? I'm 5'9, 160lbs and in good shape for an old man (49) but I don't want anything too difficult to start with. Ideally I would want a board I can stand on to start. I would prefer to buy a used board initially. Can you please recommend a board and give me an idea of what the fair price would be for a used one? I found a Bic Veloce 328 on Craiglist that seemed a good fit for me. What are your thoughts on the Veloce? How much is it worth?

Thanks,
Chip

ANSWER: I believe that board is about 10 years old so it is not worth much. If you can demo it before you buy it that would be the best way to go.  Price s/b no more than $300 (board only) depending on condition.
You would do better with a board that is no more than 5 to 7 years old.  Unless you really know a lot about boards and what to look for in a used board you may be buying a board that has been repaired and/or absorbed water.
I would recommend a board in the 140 to 150 liter range for someone your weight.  Start with a 6.5 to 7 meter sail.
A used board around this size in good condition that is not too old should be in the $300 to $600 range depending on the age and condition.

QUESTION: Thanks Patrick. This is very helpful. Can you recommend a used brand/model? For the full kit - board, sail, boom, etc - what would be a reasonable price?

Can you also recommnd a new brand/model whould I decide to go that route?

Thanks
Chip

Answer
Brand does not mean much.  You do not need to buy the full kit same maker. Just look for the volume you want first.  Then look at condition. Price is so hard to say. It all depends on condition and quality.  If you buy a mast that is 100% carbon it will be lighter and more costly than a 50% carbon mast.  If you buy a boom that is all carbon it will be stiffer and more costly than aluminum. Decide how much you want to spend and see what you can get for the $$.  For top of the line used kit you are looking at around $1000 to $1200.
