tie on boom

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased an old windsurfing board with a tie on Mistral boom.  In a post within the last month you mentioned that you could give some insight as to how to tie that on.  My boom has a handle on the end with one large hole for the rope used to lift the sail.  There is one cleet as well.

One set of instructions I found on the internet gave a method where you have two smaller holes to run the 1/4 inch rope through, but that does me no good.

The end of the boom also has kind of flared plastic that goes up against the mast which almost look like channels to run the rope through.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Hey Mitch,

Here are a couple of links to previous answers. Both describe how to attach a tie on boom. The first one has a picture of a Mistral boom that should be similar to yours.

QUESTION: Thanks for the help, but both those methods involve a boom
head with two holes.  Mine has a big one for the rope to
lift the sail out of the water, but no other.  I tried to
run the rope used to tie on the boom through that same hole
but it was too tight.  I really though I would be able to
find an old manual on line showing what Mistral intended
when it was first sold.

Anyway, any other possibilities for a boom head like mine?

Thanks again.

Answer
Hey Mitch,

My only suggestion would be to either drill a couple of holes similar to the ones in the pic. Just try to select an area that would be strong and not weaken the boom head.

Another option that I highly recommend would be to replace the boom head with a clamp on type head. A clamp on head is much easier and quicker than a tie on type. The angle may be a bit different than yours but if you take the boom tail off and install the boom arms to the new head, then you can pull the boom arms together enough to attach the boom tail.

Here is the web site for a new head;

The Classic is the one you will want for your boom. For $20 it is a very inexpensive fix for your boom.

Hope this helps.
