Low wind windsurfing for intermediates
Question
Hi!
I am an intermediate level windsurfer, meaning I can plane in the footstraps and harness, do a fast tack, heli tack and basic jibe. I am using the Fanatic Eagle 125 board with sails 5.8, 6.6 and 8.5.
I am moving away from the sea to a place where the wind is generally low so my question is the following:
What kind of gear should I buy to maximize my time on the water (lake with usually 8-15 knots of wind)? I am thinking of a used Starboard F-type or maybe even Fanatic Falcon TT 155 formula board. I am wondering how hard is it to start using formula machines?
Thanks a lot.
Answer
Hey Andrej,
Your 125 should work just fine with the 8.5 in 10-12kts. but it may take a little work to get on a plane. Using the formula boards is not difficult. It's just a matter of learning the particular techniques of a wide, fast board. They are definitely the board to have for light wind speed. Most suggest adding an adjustable outhaul to your boom to maximize the changes in conditions and get maximum speed from the board. But it just something to consider once you figure out how to sail the board.

Hope this helps.
