One Design mast
Question
My Mistral One Design has no mast track just a pocket that the foot slips into, so I am guessing it is an early model. I have all the original parts in good condition, except I cant find any info on the sails(they are original windsurfer brand sails) to help me replace the mast. Both sails use the same length mast as the smaller sail just has an extended mast sleeve at the top to accomodate the longer mast. The mast sleeve on both sails is 420cm. Do you know what the original One Design would have used for a mast? I have all original equipment for this board and would really like to get a proper mast for it. Thank you for your answer to my last question it definitely put me much closer to replacing this mast.
thanx again

Answer
Hey Kurt,
Your One Design is one of the original models and your mast foot is a very specific mast foot. Take good care of it and don't lose it as finding a replacement is next to impossible. You can replace the u-joint (black rubber part) but the plastic parts are almost obsolete.
The original masts were a very stiff aluminum mast and are about as rare as the mast foot. As for a replacement mast for your sails, with a mast sleeve of 420cm unrigged, my guess would be that you would need a 460cm mast. The older sails liked a stiff mast so look for something at least a 27-29mcs. Mosts masts you will find now have a percentage of carbon built in to them. The higher the carbon content, the lighter a mast will be and usually stronger. But, the price also goes up with higher carbon content. Something with 30% carbon should work fine for your sails. The type of mast you get will depend upon your budget.
Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
