Kids Rigs

Question
I am getting back into windsurfing after a "Dad break" and I want my 12yr old/7st son to learn. I have got a older Fanatic Lite Bat with centreboard as a starter for nothing.  To get him started, can I get away with a small wave sail on a standard rig, if so what size, or do I have to track down a kids rig? I imagine that the kids rigs are lighter, however sails at 2m do seem really small.
Cheers

Having read your other advice, is what got me thinking about getting wet and beaten up again.

Answer
Hey Richard,

A small wave sail should work fine for your son to start out on. The key to setting the rig up for him would be adjusting the height of the sail/boom opening so that the boom would be at chest to shoulder height for him. Kids rigs are lighter but a 12yr old should be able to handle a small wave sail as they are easy to get out of the water. Try to use the lightest mast you have to make rope starting easier for him. As his technique improves, and his strength grows, pulling the sail out of the water will get easier. Just remember to have lots of patience and try to make it as fun as possible.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
