New board for old sailor

Question
I used to dabble in windsurfing 10-15 years ago and would like to get back on a board this summer. When I stopped windsurfing I was just learning to water start and was using a harness. I had a big board and sail which made life difficult when it blew over 10-12 knots.I sail in an area where 10-18 knots is the norm.I weigh around 190lbs.What would be a good board and sail combination to look for?

Answer
Hi Chip,
Welcome back!  The new boards and sails are much easier to sail than 10 to 15 years ago.  One thing you may need to know is that the newer sails have greater wind range so you should use a bigger sail than what you remember.  I have gone up almost a full meter.  My old 6.5 is replaced with a 7.2 as my biggest sail but I weigh only 140 lbs.
I would recommend a board in the 140 to 160 liter range.  My friend is about your weight and he can easily uphaul a 125 liter board. At your weight you should be able to uphaul it when needed.  I would recommend a 7 to 7.5 sail as your biggest size. Sailwork's Retro range is about the best all around sail for the money.  Windsurf Magazine's latest issue has some board tests in the 140 to 160 range.  As always, it's best to demo a board if possible or buy a used board and demo it first.
Good Luck and good wind!
Patrick
